Trepanning Solutions
At TSI we really enjoy the challanges and satisfaction we get from solving unique and unusual jobs our customer's bring to us. We want to take these pages to pass along some of the more interesting projects and how we accomplished them.
Our customer presented us with eighty blocks of 4340. Each block was 24" square and weighed more than 1000 lbs. The blocks are used as mounts for rocket motors during transport.
The job was to trepan a 6" hole off center through the blocks. We milled an aluminum jig to hold the front of the block while the rear was mounted into a 4 jaw chuck. In this photo we are preparing to check the jigs location by premounting the block into the jig. Irregular forgings can be trepanned by keeping the part stationary and rotating the trepan head.
This is the finished job with the core material remaining that can be used for other jobs in the future or as test specimens.
